There comes a time in every person’s life when FOOD HAPPEN. This undeniable truth, for those of us who enjoy being alive, is a rather costly part of living. But it is also a wonderful one. Our tiny kitchen has no oven, so we won’t be making pot pies or french fries, nor enchiladas or baked potatoes. Stir fry, soup, rice, and meat can and have happened. There is the chance to explore another country’s selection of groceries and see what the typical fare is, what is popular, and take in some new labeling. And going out to eat, too. I think that this also has to happen to get a taste for what’s happening in a city. The commonplace is amusing to an outlander, and i am easily amused anyway, so the packaging has been a source of great joy for me.
The first week+ when random free Wifi hotspots were our only source of WWW connectivity, i had to learn how to use a smartphone touch screen rather quickly. Skulking around outside cafes Internet makes this all so -relatively- easy (I do wonder how much more of a challenge international travel must have been before search engines and satellite maps. Too bad i missed out on that!.. It didn’t take long to find the grocery stores closest to us, especially considering that Scarlett did the research ahead of time. We have a Rewe (think Grocery Outlet) not 15 minutes’ leisurely walk from here, and there’s a Real (pronounced ‘Rey-all’) market about 15 minutes North on the U-Bahn towards Gesundbrunner… Oh, and spätkauf (late purchase) stores litter the landscape. If you need beer, candy or other not-foods, the 7-11 of Germany can help you!
On the way to the store, we saw this beautiful creation:
Graffiti is very much apart of the city. It is everywhere, and while some is the usual territory marking scrawl, but some is gorgeous eye candy, and much of it is infused with meaning by the artists. More on those folks later, there’s a whole tour that i got to take 2nd hand from Ben with tons of photos.
Looks like it will be a great experience – have fun!
Danke schön! So far snazzy happenings abound~. I hope that you & Hannah are both doing wonderfully!
