Groceries & graffiti April 19, 2016

There comes a time in every person’s life when FOOD HAPPEN.  This undeniable truth, for those of us who enjoy being alive, is a rather costly part of living.  But it is also a wonderful one.  Our tiny kitchen has no oven, so we won’t be making pot pies or french fries, nor enchiladas or baked potatoes. Stir fry, soup, rice, and meat can and have happened.  There is the chance to explore another country’s selection of groceries and see what the typical fare is, what is popular, and take in some new labeling.  And going out to eat, too.  I think that this also has to happen to get a taste for what’s happening in a city.   The commonplace is amusing to an outlander, and i am easily amused anyway, so the packaging has been a source of great joy for me.

Meheheh… Bratherings is a great word. Seems to me like a mixture of blather, rather & muttering.

Most popular chip flavor here? Definitely paprika.

Not sure what Chester is, but all 10 Scheiben (slices) are replete with it!

White chocolate cat tongues!

Sunnies (salt flavor?) ‘Tater snacks! The salt shaker at a jaunty angle is amusing, as though that makes it more exciting or delicious looking.

Yes! Long grain rice! "Ja!" brand seems equivalent to "Western Family" back in the homeland.

Yes! Long grain rice!  Didn’t know it when i took the photo, but  “Ja!” brand is ubiquitous here, roughly equivalent to “Western Family” back in the homeland.

The first week+ when random free Wifi hotspots were our only source of WWW connectivity, i had to learn how to use a smartphone touch screen rather quickly.  Skulking around outside cafes Internet makes this all so -relatively- easy (I do wonder how much more of a challenge international travel must have been before search engines and satellite maps.  Too bad i missed out on that!..  It didn’t take long to find the grocery stores closest to us, especially considering that Scarlett did the research ahead of time.  We have a Rewe (think Grocery Outlet) not 15 minutes’ leisurely walk from here, and there’s a Real (pronounced ‘Rey-all’) market about 15 minutes North on the U-Bahn towards Gesundbrunner…  Oh, and spätkauf (late purchase) stores litter the landscape.  If you need beer, candy or other not-foods, the 7-11 of Germany can help you!

At night, the light from a spätkauf draws you in like a moth. Then you leave with stuff you don't really need.

That... Is a confusing mess of beer bottles. Go Spätkauf! (Photo by Lukas Uhde)

,,The five star egg!” Fresh, local, cage free eggs. Better than most eggs i see in the  homeland. The yolk is a vibrant orange and they taste pretty dang good! Bratkartoffeln mit Rührei und ein paar Stücke Speck~. Ein leckeres Frühstück!

On the way to the store, we saw this beautiful creation:

Haven’t been here yet, is a vintage 2nd hand store. Liked the reference “It was named Pauls Boutique, just like the Beastie Boys album. I thought that the weird mix of samples and genres made a very good record and somehow I imagined my store the same way.” Here’s their website!

Hallo und guten Tag, leering, suggestive sausage statue. Whatever you’re selling, i want no part of it.
