To the Museuminsel, part 1 April 23, 2016

The first trip to Museuminsel; a chunk of land in the Spree which supports several museums (go figure), each of which contain a vast array of relics from the ancient world.  Etruscan, Arabic, Greek, Roman, Babylonian…  Surely others as well, but i only looked at the outsides on this day, and at brochures.  Actually went inside the Altes Museum today, but we’ll get to those photos later.  Over about 3 hours i took almost 400 photos of ancient Greek sculptures, jewelry, armor, coins, etc.  And that was ONE floor in ONE museum!  Didn’t even make it to the Roman or Etruscan area upstairs…  Breathtaking, really, and time consuming.  Three months is not enough to see this city.  I knew this going in, but now i can quantify it.  So enough writing…

The Berliner Dom, or Berlin Cathedral, or officially, the Evangelical Supreme Parish and Collegiate Church

The Berliner Dom, or Berlin Cathedral, or officially, the Evangelical Supreme Parish and Collegiate Church.  This is looking at the Southwest-facing wall.

Look at all its majesty! Yep, biggest cathedral in Berlin, i hear.

And here’s a pic from the front– just look at all its majesty!  Biggest cathedral in Berlin, i hear.  …Then there’s the seemingly ever-present Fernsehturm modernizing the landscape in the background.

…And here’s what it looked like shortly ater completion. Color Etching by Friedrich Thiele, 1830.

Several statues line a nearby bridge. I looked up and saw a hand coming outta this guy's head. It was too smileworthy to ignore.

Between all these museums was this quote, which i am unqualified to translate fully. I get something about “What makes a great artist is a great will, but a will with intention is not will.” That second part knots my brain a bit. Stay tuned for a 2nd opinion on that…  EDIT: Ben helped me out. “What makes a great artist is a great will, but a will that is wanted, not a will that wants.”

Stopped mid-stride to take this. It looked like a place i wanted to go.

Stopped mid-stride to take this. I wanted to explore but it was way past food o’clock. Also it has a pleasing dark/light dichotomy thing goin’ on.

...Oh, really?.. Of what, praytell? Duvet covers?

…Oh, really?.. Of what, praytell? …It’s actually a fashionable clothing store but i had to find their website to know that.  Screen-printed tees, jeans with strange patterns,  scarves for everyone.  Scarves are quite popular here– I was surprised by that.

The English caught my eye. “Against virtual terror [dislike button won’t help?]. Do what really counts. -Project Digital Power” That is intriguing.  I am curious about this campaign and its reason for being.  What have they seen that needs empowering?

Maybe we were fatigued, but Scarlett and i found this sign pretty funny. She later proclaimed "Flexible McMenu" as her stripper name, should that day ever come.

The entrance to the courtyard next to ours. I wonder if they have a panopticon too..?

Weinbergsweg. We are almost to our apartment and i am still snapping photos. Torstraße is another block ahead, for reference.

Lens through a lens. This is what our hallway looks like through the peephole!

Lens through a lens… This is what our hallway looks like through the peephole!  Maybe i can talk Scarlett into a cool shot with her peering in.  That might be cool…

Time to go to bed!  But i have other photos lined up to… O, bah!  Too many photos and not enough coal to get this locomotive chugging!  I will make blog happen more tomorrow.  I think next time is Brandenburg gate and a small fraction of Tiergarten…  Yup, looks like it!20160403_123957_Pano
